Did you know the FAA provides many essential flight training books online for free? These resources are widely used in training programs, making them an excellent (and cost-effective) way to get ahead in your studies.

A quick note for students: The FAA Student Pilot Guide (FAA-H-8083-27) was canceled and is no longer in publication. However, all the information once found in the guide has been integrated into other FAA resources, which are freely available and updated.

Here are three essential FAA publications every student pilot should consider reading:

1. Aeronautical Chart User’s Guide

Being able to interpret aeronautical charts is a foundational skill in aviation. The Aeronautical Chart User’s Guide offers a comprehensive breakdown of sectional, VFR, IFR, and other charts, covering essential symbols, airspace boundaries, navigational aids, and more. Whether you’re flying VFR or IFR, this guide will help you understand the charts you’ll use on every flight.

2. Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK) (FAA-H-8083-25C)

The Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK) covers all the foundational concepts every pilot should know, from aerodynamics and weather to navigation and communication. Known simply as the PHAK, this book provides the knowledge base needed to understand flight operations and is an excellent resource throughout your training and beyond.

3. Airplane Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-3C)

The Airplane Flying Handbook focuses on the practical, hands-on side of flight training. Covering flight maneuvers, landing techniques, and emergency procedures, this book is beneficial for understanding the physical skills and techniques you’ll practice with your instructor. It’s a go-to guide for building strong flying fundamentals.

Additional Resources

The FAA provides additional free resources on various aviation topics, from advanced aerodynamics to instrument procedures. Explore more of these materials on the FAA’s Flight Training Publications page.
